The Syro Malabar Church: A Legacy of Faith and Tradition
The Syro Malabar Church traces its origins to St. Thomas, the apostle of India, who evangelized the region between 42 and 72 AD. With a 2000-year-old legacy, the Church has preserved its faith and traditions, making significant contributions to society.
Catholic Congress: The Official Lay Organization
The Catholic Congress, formerly known as AKCC, is the official lay organization of the Syro Malabar Church. As a catalyst for change, it plays a pivotal role in both the Church and society. In its 106th year, the organization continues to work toward revitalizing the Church and empowering the laity.
Global Presence and Mission
Since its inception in 1918, the Catholic Congress has expanded to over 80 countries across six continents. With a presence in 30 Syro Malabar dioceses and 2000 parishes in Kerala, it has grown alongside the migrant community, offering support and guidance. Its mission aligns with the Church’s evangelical efforts and the principles of the Second Vatican Council.
A Commitment to the Agrarian Community
Echoing Pope Francis' call for a "poor church for the poor," the Catholic Congress prioritizes the upliftment of the agrarian sector, which constitutes 85% of its members. Various self-sustaining programs and projects focus on economic and social empowerment.
Strength and Expansion of the Syro Malabar Church
With over 50 lakh faithful, the Syro Malabar Church remains deeply rooted in Kerala while expanding globally. The Catholic Congress, as one of the oldest lay organizations in Asia, is recognized by the Syro Malabar Bishops' Synod as the official voice of the laity, spearheading transformative initiatives.
Syro Malabar Community: A Legacy of Hard Work and Resilience
The Syro Malabar community has a history of perseverance, overcoming harsh climatic conditions, natural calamities, and agrarian struggles. The Catholic Congress has played a vital role in this growth, ensuring the community remains strong and progressive.
Challenges and Future Vision
The Catholic Congress emphasizes the need to adapt to global advancements, particularly in technology and entrepreneurship. Socio-technical transformations require the community to develop dynamic skills for empowerment and progress.
Global Reach of Catholic Congress
With a presence in 35 Syro Malabar dioceses and mission stations worldwide, the Catholic Congress is a driving force in dioceses across India and in international locations such as the USA, Europe, the Gulf, and the Middle East.
Empowering the Laity: A Fruit of Vatican II
Vatican Council II affirmed the vital role of the laity in the Church. The Catholic Congress, with its 103-year legacy, has been instrumental in community upliftment and stands as the official voice of the laity, as seen in its recently concluded Global Meet in Dubai.
Vision and Action for a Stronger Future
The Catholic Congress believes in the synergy of vision and action. By fostering faith, education, and service, it continues to shape the identity and future of the Syro Malabar community worldwide.
